Holy cow！ This was an epic read。 Fallon was such a complex character: cautious yet courageous， selfless with a jealous streak， naïve and （sometimes， lol） perceptive， loyal but ferocious if crossed。 I did start suspecting one of the major plot twists about a third into the story， but overall the plot was highly unpredictable。 Amazingly though， the story didn't feel jerky despite its rapid， tortuous pace。 What surprised me most - besides the innovative story and worldbuilding - was the character g Holy cow！ This was an epic read。 Fallon was such a complex character: cautious yet courageous， selfless with a jealous streak， naïve and （sometimes， lol） perceptive， loyal but ferocious if crossed。 I did start suspecting one of the major plot twists about a third into the story， but overall the plot was highly unpredictable。 Amazingly though， the story didn't feel jerky despite its rapid， tortuous pace。 What surprised me most - besides the innovative story and worldbuilding - was the character growth。 Fallon's loyalty makes her blind to some things and she makes mistakes sometimes， but her personality shifts from mouse to lion throughout the book。 I wouldn't say it ends on a cliff hanger， but it's also clear Fallon's journey is nowhere near finished。 Need。 Sequel。 Now。 :） 。。。more

*4。5 Stars*I love how they author created such a big， detailed and complicated world for me to get lost in。 Not only do I know about their culture and beliefs， but I know about their history and wars and enemies- but I never once felt overwhelmed by a info dump， it was so well placed throughout the plot and the dialog， I absorbed it seamlessly。 I have read lots of other series by this author， but this is the first time I have read an entirely new world she has created from scratch and it was so *4。5 Stars*I love how they author created such a big， detailed and complicated world for me to get lost in。 Not only do I know about their culture and beliefs， but I know about their history and wars and enemies- but I never once felt overwhelmed by a info dump， it was so well placed throughout the plot and the dialog， I absorbed it seamlessly。 I have read lots of other series by this author， but this is the first time I have read an entirely new world she has created from scratch and it was so well done。This is a perfect series to jump into if you like the Fae， magic， battles， court politics， angst and looming war， as well as magic， magical creatures， action and big reveals （if you are a fan of the Blood and Ash series this is your next book choice！）。 I kept trying to guess what would happen next and I loved it every time I was wrong and some twist was thrown out at me。 The cast of characters was developed， I felt like I knew and understood everyone， and the side characters were some of my favorite to be honest。 While the main character， Fallen， was a very dependable， honorable person， she at times was too naïve for me- I legit wanted to shake her a few times at her thought process。If you are looking for a sweet romance， turn away now， because this is not that book。 Instead this was an epic start to what I can only expect to be a very tumultuous alliance that I hope leads to love- whilst in the middle of a very bloody revolution and adventure。 。。。more

Good butI liked the story， the world， and most of the people。 Fallon， on the other hand， was one of the most annoying characters I’ve ever encountered。 I almost DNF’ed at multiple points because I couldn’t stand her。 I think I’ll only read book two if it’s alternating points of view between her and the main man （won’t use his name to avoid spoilers）。

I read a lot of fantasy romance and Olivia Wildenstein never ever disappoints。 While the Feather trilogy was a fantasy romance， it did not focus too heavily on world-building。 Instead， she let the characters and their personal growth speak for themselves and the fantasy remained in the backdrop。 This is not the case in HOBW。HOBW is a rich story filled with so much detail， lore， and mysticism。 When I picked this book up， I was to be honest， in a reading slump， and for the first time in a while， c I read a lot of fantasy romance and Olivia Wildenstein never ever disappoints。 While the Feather trilogy was a fantasy romance， it did not focus too heavily on world-building。 Instead， she let the characters and their personal growth speak for themselves and the fantasy remained in the backdrop。 This is not the case in HOBW。HOBW is a rich story filled with so much detail， lore， and mysticism。 When I picked this book up， I was to be honest， in a reading slump， and for the first time in a while， completely drawn in and didn't put the book down until I was done。 It is such a beautiful thing to be enraptured by a story that time ceases to matter。I do not enjoy reviews that basically spoil the entire book for you， and give you a synopsis or play-by-play， so I won't do that。 What I will say is that this is a slow-burn romance， that also cleverly and honestly shows the reality of first love and fickle young love。 I appreciate how genuine Olivia's stories and characters are。 She really captures the essence of what it means to be。。。 A PERSON。 A flawed， dynamic person with feelings and layers。 This book takes you on a fun adventure that will have you falling in love with a bird who can't talk。 How she accomplished that。。。 I will never know lol！ This is a must-read and I can't wait for the next one。 P。S。 OHHH AND DID I MENTION THAT THE BOOK COMES WITH CHARACTER ART？？？？？？？ The character art is gorgeous and really helps you envision the characters she is describing！ 。。。more

I really enjoyed this first in series。 The different array of creatures， fae and kingdoms were fascinating。 The world and how magic is perceived was interesting。 It did take some time for me to like Fallon but I did warm up to her。 The pacing can be slow at times but overall it is a great story and I look foreward to the next in series
